A series of vulnerabilities known as "ReVault" has been identified, affecting millions of Dell laptops, particularly the Latitude and Precision series, widely used in corporate and sensitive environments, including government and cybersecurity organisations. These vulnerabilities specifically target the Broadcom security chip within Dell's ControlVault3 firmware, enabling attackers to steal sensitive information and gain persistent access to compromised systems.
All five critical flaws discovered by researchers from Cisco Talos are rated as high severity (CVSS scores exceeding 8.0). They include out-of-bounds read/write issues and buffer overflows, which could allow for remote code execution and ongoing compromises that are difficult to detect even after system reinstalls. Additionally, physical attacks are a concern, as attackers can directly access the hardware via USB, bypassing login credentials entirely.
Dell has acknowledged the vulnerabilities and has been collaborating with Broadcom to release necessary firmware updates starting in March 2025. Customers were informed of these issues on June 13, 2025. Importantly, the company has stated that there is no evidence of active exploitation in the wild.
The updates can be accessed through Dell’s support website and via Windows Update. Organisations are strongly encouraged to implement these updates immediately, as automated deployment may not reach all restricted enterprise environments.
